Most flat roofs are hot bitumen-applied roof felt and are used on all types of flat roofs including home extensions and garages. 

However whilst roof felt is a low cost solution, it only has a lifespan of between 15 to 20 years if professionally installed. That’s because the felt strips eventually fail due to expansion and contraction in hot and cold temperatures allowing water to eventually seep through the joints.

If you are looking for a longer lasting solution, we recommend either EPDM rubber roofing or GRP fibreglass roofing both of which have a lifespan of between 50 to 60 years. Fibreglass should be chosen if you intend to walk on the flat roof, for example, to create a roof terrace. Both fibreglass and rubber are highly water resistant and because there are no seals, the roof remains watertight for longer provided it has been installed by a professional roofer like Urmston Roofing.
